I met another interesting educationalist…..
Steve | October 24, 2007Last night in Second Life following a link from a secondlife education mailing list I popped over to LeedsMet island (slurl.com/secondlife/LeedsMet/105/108/22/). What an interesting place it is, but what was more interesting was chatting to Cubist Scarborough and trying out some of his free objects for use within Second Life.
The first item I had a play with and then took a copy of was the ‘Markerboard’.

If you touch the board it points you to a webpage that has a java version of the board, whatever you draw on this board will appear on the board within Second Life - a nice application
The next item I went on to find was a set of chairs surrounding a table.

What I liked about this set up was that if you chat on the channel displayed on the centre of the board, the chat message is displayed on the white banner that moves around the table, ideal for group discussions.
The third tool(s) were boards for displaying chats.

The top bar displays static text, each time an avatar chats on that channel (/400 in this case) the text would appear, you could have multiple copies of this bar, one for each student/group to type on. The lower bar is a teletype sign, so the text moves along it as an avatar types on the correct channel.
I think all these tools could have a place in a learning environment within Second Life and I would like to thank Cubist and LeedsMet for sharing these resources freely.
